Writing Plan and Record: Lizzi Perkins

Both A Valediction Forbidding Mourning and The Ecstasy by John Donne are very lyrical poems with beautiful diction used to express strong emotion. I would like to analyze the extended metaphors/conceits used in both poems as well as focusing on similarities and differences in the type of imagery Donne uses (especially in how the language is used to emote). There are also the more metaphysical aspects of the poems that I may or may not delve into.

Listening to the poems helped me realize his use of numbers (one and two) while describing the soul. I also noticed a lot of similar sounds through both alliteration and consonance that made the poem more musical. In A Valediction it was easier to tell where separate stanzas began and ended because of the specific thoughts expressed; whereas The Ecstasy's continued metaphors and enjambment lent to one flowing idea that made the lack of stanzas evident.

Honestly, I have no idea how long it took me to write my paper. Combined it was probably 2ish hours. But when writing a paper, things always unexpectedly come up: laundry, hunger, class, chatting, showering, looking at pictures of the #kylorencat, you know...just anything to stall. So my writing was done in chunks and then I compiled it all together.

I was excited because I think I have some good ideas that I hadn't thought of before and was able to get them written down. But I'm a little bit worried that, because I attacked a lot of different topics, none of my points are discussed really in depth. Also, I wasn't quite sure how to do a comparison between the two poems so I said their titles over and over and over and over again. Overall, I'm just worried because this is my first formal literary analysis in over two years. Scary.

  1. It's good that you were able to think of some new ideas as you wrote the paper. I agree that papers are really great for developing ideas as you go along. And no one's mad that you check out cat pics. We all do it sometimes.

  2. I also really liked how he used the one and two to describe the souls... definitely stood out as I listened to the poems being read out loud by someone else. And I TOTALLY feel you about the "stalling" while writing...haha. The real amount of time it takes to write a paper is kind of hard to pin down. I personally blame Pintrest. :)

  4. Yes! I'm not really sure how we were supposed to analyze the two poems together either. I'm amazed how clearly and easily you talk about the topics.
