The Art of Procrastinating

Okay so if there is one thing I am amazing at it is procrastinating. I went to the library and did my research. I have had my sources for a couple of days now and I just have just put off writing about it. SO sorry about my lateness haha

So I went to the library and ended up using many online resources for my research. I feel more comfortable navigating the website and web for sources rather than actually going up and down cases of books. But anyways... I thought it was productive and fun to see all of the interesting resources I could find that had absolutely nothing to do with Wit, but completely helped out my essay!

And I've got to give a shout out to Jonah whose resources were seriously so perfect and the ideas he gave me really helped to improve my essay! So thanks :)

I know this was supposed to be done like 3 days ago, but I figured it's better late than never.

I found all the sources that I am going to use in my essay.  I ended up using two of the the sources that Shelby found for me and they were really helpful.  I found that a lot of the sources overlap so I didn't end up using as many sources as I thought I would need to use.

The ebrary was really helpful in finding books that related to my subject.

Library Time!

Ah! So, which much ado, I have finally collected all of the sources I will be using in expanding my essay. I decided to end up using two of Kayla's provided resources, including one that I (sadly) am not allowed to leave the library with without getting arrested. All is well! I shall take meticulous notes from it before I leave.

In other words, I believe I have met all of the requirements for the research. I will be using W;t itself as a reference, the film dictionary that I am not allowed to steal, an eBook on film adaptations, and two journal articles, one dated this year, I believe, and another dated 1987.

All in all, I think I have found some good sources to expand my work with! Some of them I did get pretty excited about. Again, thank you Kayla! Great help!

The Research So Far

So far I have just been researching since I want to collect more information before I start revising my first draft. I've been looking into articles and books about ambition, pride, loneliness, and the relationship between cancer patients and their doctors or caregivers. This will help me expand on my thesis and discuss the similarities and differences between Vivian and Jason.

I've found the ebrary to be very useful in helping me find books or articles that I can use and then letting me save them and mark the parts that are important for me. I think it will help a lot when I go to make the outline and revise because I will waste less time searching for the research that I've already done.

I Actually Used My Time Wisely

I used my time walking around the library and getting familiar with how research outside of the web feels. I looked up several books and journals, some relating to irony and others were research papers about cancer. I wasn't really looking for anything specific. I just wanted to try and see how it would go!
I even tried looking at similar books that were nearby on the shelf. I was able to find some potential books and journals that could be helpful to my writing.
I'm still not entirely sure which direction I am going to go with my research paper, but I'm glad I had the chance to see how many options I have!

Checking In on Research

First off, I want to say thank you to Lizzi. The sources she found are helpful and she has really great ideas. I think I will be using a good number of the sources she provided.

I'm still thinking about what arguments will divide an educated audience for my thesis. I'm leaning toward the idea that while music does play a key role in showing character development, it's the silences that really give us the information we need about them.

I like the direction of focusing on music and using Wit as a supporting feature. I'm mulling over the idea of pulling in John Cage and 4'33" as another supporting example of the use of silence. I realized that I needed to go back to part of the film, near the end and analyze the use of the music particularly as the story reaches its climax.

I'm still in the research phase and I've got a little more research still to do. By the end of tomorrow, I hope to be on to the paper writing full force. Mostly, though, I'm just glad to be writing about music.

It Would Probably Be a Good Idea to Actually REPORT My Research...

As I went through the list of source types that we would need as well as the sources Rebekah so kindly compiled for me, I found that I could use a lot of what she suggested. The sources suggested fit my thesis and arguments perfectly, and I could see a use for most of them. That being said, I went on the hunt for other sources I'd need as different types. I successfully found a single volume from an academic publisher that was also an ebook, and it will be of great use to me because it's about the science of loneliness and love. I do have to admit, finding a journal article from more than ten years ago was a bit difficult, but I found one eventually. I'll probably expand my paper to explore other roles in the allegory of the soul besides just the mother.

Research Report

Today is basically my only day to get any homework done, so I decided to knock the whole essay out while I was in the library.  I was able to find a lot of good sources, though it was hard to narrow down which ones I wanted to use and which directions I would take for the paper.  Eventually, I decided on focusing on the uses and a little of the history of metaphysical conceit.  I also released my inner grammar nerd and researched the uses of commas and semicolons and their distinct uses.

I'll admit, it was kind of hard to find a not-so-recent journal article! At least, harder than I expected.  But it happened, so that's all that matters.

Today has been really productive, though I don't love sitting in the library forever, especially when it's such a great day outside ;) Maybe this is what Vivian felt like as a college student.

Research Ideas for Jonah

I found too many things, really. Picking the things that would be most interesting and relevant was a little bit difficult. Because your paper focused on The Runaway Bunny, most of my ideas revolved around that.

Research Ideas for Rebekah

Research Ideas for Lizzi

The formatting is super weird for the hanging indent... I had a hard time figuring out how to make it look like a works cited page... haha. :) Here are five sources that I found for Lizzi's essay:

Timmermans, Stefan, and Hyeyoung Oh. “The Continued Social Transformation of the Medical           Profession”. Journal of Health and Social Behavior 51 (2010): S94–S106. Web.

I thought this article would be a good place to start looking into the background behind Jason's career and how patient care wasn't often a priority to him... it might give some good insights as you're comparing the two different fields, too.

Balkrishnan, Rajesh et al.. “Trust and Satisfaction with Physicians, Insurers, and the Medical Profession”. Medical Care 41.9 (2003): 1058–1064. Web...

I also liked this article in respect to the behavior of doctors and medical professionals in the work place. I feel like achieving a good background knowledge of the more medical side of the play can definitely add to the depth of your essay. You don't even really need to use anything directly in your essay from these sources, but just knowing about some of this information can help you examine the world of poetry and medicine more objectively.

Hulme, William E.. “The Problems of College Students”. Christian Education 34.1 (1951): 17–25. Web.

Even though this article is from the 1950's, I felt like it still had some interesting ideas that are prevalent even today. It talks about certain issues that college students face, something that could add to your second paragraph (in mentioning Vivian's college flashback).

Fagiano, Mark. “Pluralistic Conceptualizations of Empathy”. The Journal of Speculative Philosophy 30.1 (2016): 27–44. Web.

In regards to your third paragraph, this could be extremely helpful in analyzing Vivian and Jason's lack of emotional ties to others.

Dalrymple, Theodore. “Between the Lines: On the Detection of Fakes”. BMJ: British Medical Journal 334.7599 (2007): 905–905. Web.

Raby, Philip. "Medical Classics: Wit". BMJ: British Medical Journal  334.7599 (2007): 905-905. Web.

So this particular source is small in size... it's just a side article in the BMJ and so the sourcing is a little tricky. I went ahead and did two sources just in case it was harder to find... but really, this article was short, sweet and to the point. You could also look further into Raby's course that he teaches, but this article I felt like put a good point out about how uncomfortable medical students should feel as they watch "Wit." The play is used by medical professors to teach their students how NOT to treat their patients. This could add to your argument that Jason has time to change; by using the example of what happened to Vivian, his future (and the future of other medical students) can be far better.

Basically there are so many fun articles to research. I had a hard time stopping at just five.

Research for Kayla

Here are some possible sources for Kayla's paper. Hopefully this is helpful!

(1) Miller, Suzanne M., Deborah J. Bowen, Robert T. Croyle, and Julie H. Rowland. Handbook of cancer control and behavioral science: A resource for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. Washington DC: US : American Psychological Association, 2009. Print.

This source looks at the important relationship between a cancer patient and their provider, especially in terms of communication. This applies to the paper because it can explore the interactions between Vivian and Jason and why they were so emotionally ineffective for her.

(2) Moore, Rhonda J., and David Spiegel. Cancer, Culture, and Communication. New York: Kluwer/ Plenum, 2004. Print.

This source again focuses on the relationship between a patient and their doctors. It covers communication and other aspects of cancer life. This is helpful in again looking in to the relationship between Vivian and Jason and why she was unable to be honest with him.

(3) Rajaraman, B, B Dey, PP Majumder, S Mayor, and MR Pillai. "First International Workshopson Provocative Questions (PQ) in Cancer Research, October-November 2014, New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Thiruvananthapuram, India." Journal Of Cancer Policy 6 (2015): 33-36. Print.

This could be a helpful source because it focuses on the importance of research and collaborative work. Jason proudly despised such work, and this is part of his emotional distance from everyone around him.

(4) Froggatt, K, N Preston, N Turner, and C Kurr. "Patient and public involvement in research and the Cancer Experiences Collaborative: benefits and challenges." BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care 5 (2015): 518-21. Print.

This article could also be helpful with showing the benefits of collaboration, but it also goes into the affects of motivation and communication on cancer patients during their treatment. This could expand on the flaws in the relationship between Jason and Vivian,

(5) Wilson, Deirdre. "Irony comprehension: A developmental perspective." Journal of Pragmatics 59.A (2013): 40-56. Print.

This source talks about irony as a literary and verbal device, and it could be useful for delving more into the irony of both Vivian and Jason's character in their statements and actions.

Nicole, Here are Some Sources...

1.  This one's an interesting look at how Scrooge's transformation in A Christmas Carol can be used to help develop spiritual and psychological therapy, which may increase the strength of your comparison between Scrooge's transformation and Vivian's.

Clarke, Joseph H. "The Metapsychology Of Character Change: A Case Study Of Ebenezer Scrooge." Journal Of Spirituality In Mental Health 11.4 (2009): 248-263.

2. I thought that maybe it may also be good for your comparison between different stories using flashbacks to incorporate a story where the flashbacks are actually harmful to the character instead of eliciting a character transformation. I think this story would help because there are several ways one could interpret the use of flashback in this story.

Thurber, James. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." The New Yorker 1939

3.  This one's an academic article about how the use of flashback can add drama to a story. Very straightforward and relevant to your thesis.

Moore, Sarah.  "How the Techniques of Flashback and Foreshadowing Can Have a Dramatic Effect on a Piece of Writing" Seattle Pi http://education.seattlepi.com/techniques-flashback-foreshadowing-can-dramatic-effect-piece-writing-5044.html

4. This is an article about the different learning styles children can have; it could help flesh out why the first flashback with Vivian as a child had such an impact on the rest of her life.

"Affective Learning Styles Of Children: Implications For Special Education." Education 106.1 (1985): 29.

5. As cheesy as this source may seem, your last paragraph about Vivian choosing her death because Susie explained the choices reminded me of the verse in the Book of Mormon that says "By small and simple things may great things come to pass." So, what better way to give a comparison for the small kindnesses Susie does for Vivian than to cite that verse and examples in the BoM of small things bringing great results?

The Book of Mormon. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Palmyra, New York 1830. Print.

H     Hopefully some of these help!

Some Ideas for Shelby :)

Okay so here we go!

While reading your paper I thought that it would be cool to not only make comparisons of Vivian and the Holy Sonnet but also some comparisons between other works of literature, uses of literary functions, as well as scientific research.

Morphine:

So when reading your paragraph about death as a drug my mind immediately went to a Brave New World and Soma in the hospitals. I thought it would be really cool to pull some connections about how in that novel, the doctors give their patients so much soma to take away the pains of dying that by the time they do die, they have been in a soma coma for a hecka long time... AND SO you could totally compare that to the doctors giving patients morphine and allowing them to choose how much they want and when they want it, etc...

So for this I found a couple of resources:

1) The Novel-- For direct comparison

Huxley, Aldous. Brave New World. New York: Perennial Classics, 1998. Print.

2) A Book About Soma- It's uses, and everything else you would possibly want to know about it

Wasson, R. Gordon. Soma: Divine Mushroom Of Immortality. [New York]: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1971. Print.

3) Morphine Practices in Medicine- Uses, Misuses, etc

Hirsch, Anne et al. "Prescription Histories And Dose Strengths Associated With Overdose Deaths". Content.ebscohost.com. N.p., 2014. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

4) Morphine in Other Works of Literature- This tells of another woman's experience in the hospital similar to Vivian's

Partyka, Iwona. "Morphine." Green Hills Literary Lantern 26.(2015): 1. Literary Reference Center. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

Okay so now that I beat that point to death.. (see what I did there??)

Here are some other points I saw that would be cool to look into:

Religious Views on Death:

Translation VS. The End -- In regards to the comma/semicolon

Fowler, Marsha Diane Mary. Religion, Religious Ethics, And Nursing. New York: Springer, 2012. Print.

You could look at it from a nursing perspective, how are nurses trained to look at death... With a comma or a semicolon??

Punctuation Usage

Salzmann, Mary Elizabeth. Comma. Edina, Minn.: ABDO Pub., 2001. Print.

Or the correct uses of a comma! And take that in consideration with the usage of semicolons...

2011, Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature & Fine Arts, volume 23, issue 2, starting on page 125, English

Parallelism

One of the things I noticed is that you are trying to draw parallels between Vivian and the poetry and so one thing you could also do is show different works of literature and explain the uses for parallelism as well as how things can be the same but completely different at the same time...which can be found:

2015, Linguistics & Philosophy, volume 38, issue 4, starting on page 289, English

Drama + Poetry-- Using One Genre to Create Another

Sewell, Elizabeth. The Structure Of Poetry. [Folcroft, Pa.]: Folcroft Library Editions, 1974. Print.

This is a book about poetry structures and you could take this and compare it to:

Hartnoll, Phyllis, and Peter Found. The Concise Oxford Companion To The Theatre. Oxford [England]: Oxford University Press, 1992. Print.

Drama and Theater.. which this book has any definition you could possibly want for this genre

Okay so I think I went a little research crazy but I just think there is SOOOOO much you can do with this paper!!

Research for Courtney

Goodfellow, John A., ed. Understanding Medical Research : The Studies That Shaped Medicine. Hoboken, NJ, USA: John Wiley & Sons, 2012. ProQuest ebrary. Web. 22 February 2016.

This book could be helpful as you try to understand Jason and his ambition.  It is about Jason’s profession of medical research and how we can understand it.

Institute of Medicine. Working Together: We Can Help People Get Good Care When They Are Dying. Washington, DC, USA: National Academies Press, 2000. ProQuest ebrary. Web. 22 February 2016.

I thought this could be a helpful resource in evaluating both Vivian and Jason who you compare in your essay.  This book talks about how hospitals should deal with people that are dying.

King, Casey. Ambition, a History: From Vice to Virtue. Print.

This book isn’t available online but they have it at the library.  I thought it could be helpful because you discuss ambition and especially the ambition of the scholars quite a bit in your essay.  This book examines the history of ambition.

"Margaret Edson." Contemporary Authors Online. Detroit: Gale, 2007. Contemporary Authors Online. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

This is a short biography about the author of the play Margaret Edson.  It gives some good insight into her perspectives on life and why she wrote the play in the first place.

Richardson, Henry S.. Moral Entanglements : The Ancillary-Care Obligations of Medical Researchers. Cary, NC, USA: Oxford University Press, USA, 2012. ProQuest ebrary. Web. 22 February 2016.

I thought this could be useful for you because you talk about how Jason just treated Vivian as a piece of research.  This book talks about the responsibilities that researchers have and how they should treat those people they are researching.
