Creative Commentaries

a) I chose Bella Crandall's paper.
b) Thesis: "What many have claimed to be idealistic love stories are actually creative commentaries that Shakespeare has written through humor and exaggerations on the fleetingness, instability, and superficial nature of infatuation, an emotion which can cause negative outcomes.
c) This is a definition theses: it redefines Shakespeare's love stories as commentaries on infatuation. This thesis accurately follows the formula that Professor Burton gave us. It addresses the counterargument that Shakespeare’s plays have been defined as great romances, then she states her argument about how the plays are commentaries on infatuation and gives a rationale (through the use of humor, exaggeration, etc.). I thought this was a really interesting premise so I wanted to read the rest of the essay.
d) Changed to a Policy Claim: Although many claim that Shakespeare’s romances portray ideal love, Shakespeare’s love stories should instead be viewed through the lens of a creative commentary on the fleetingness, instability, and superficial nature of infatuation that leads to negative outcomes.

  1. The way you changed it to a policy claim makes it easy to see how many of these different styles of claims are really similar. They are just different ways of expressing the same idea often.
